Jiann Hughes is a Sydney-based media artist, researcher, and zen yoga practitioner. Her research and creative practice uses video, sound, and interactive media to explore the affect of the body on the social domain.
She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Technology Sydney exploring how breath mediates the subjective and somatic being in the cultural realm. This practice-based investigation uses bio-sensing interactive artworks to extend the expressive potential and perceptual awareness of interactors. The works provoke participants to explore their reflections on breath as a physical, subjective and social process.
Jiann graduated with distinction in a Masters of International Social Development from the University of New South Wales where she focused on digital story telling and the use of digital media for advocacy. She has worked on a range of interactive projects with humanitarian organisations producing digital media to bring attention to the plight of displaced and dispossessed people. She is part of the art gang boat-people.org.
